Privacy
In force from 22 October 2026
Librea has no account, no analytics and no tracking. Your documents, notes and library stay on your PC. It goes online only to check for updates, and for the features listed below when you use them.
What stays on your PC
Librea keeps its data in %APPDATA%\Librea (the portable copy uses a Librea data folder next to its file):
- your settings, your library (file names, places on disk, reading progress, stars, tags, shelves);
- highlights, notes, bookmarks and drawings, in one file per document;
- flashcards, reading time, the search index and the covers it has drawn;
- your licence key, if you have one, which holds the name and email it was issued to.
Librea reads your documents to show them; it does not change them unless you ask (see the terms). Uninstalling keeps this folder so you can reinstall without losing anything; you can delete it yourself at any time (Settings › Data › Open folder).
On Windows, Librea also registers itself for the file types it opens and adds “Convert with Librea” to the right-click menu, for your Windows account only. It asks the Windows Search index to find files by type; that index stays on your PC.
When Librea goes online
| What | When | Sent to | What is sent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update check | A few seconds after start, then every 4 hours (not in the portable copy) | GitHub (github.com) | A request for the latest version. GitHub sees your IP address, like any web request. |
| Book details | When you choose Find book details | Open Library, Google Books, Crossref | The ISBN or DOI found in the book, or the title words you type |
| Look up a word | When you choose Look up or Translate | Wiktionary, Free Dictionary, MyMemory, Wikipedia | The words you selected |
| Librea AI with your own key | When you ask a question, a summary or suggested tags | Anthropic (api.anthropic.com) or OpenAI (api.openai.com), whichever key you chose | Your question and the pages of the document it needs. Your key is stored encrypted with Windows’ own protection and is sent only to its own provider. |
| Text recognition (OCR) | The first time you use a language other than English, French or Arabic | tessdata.projectnaptha.com | A download of that language’s data; your documents are read on your PC |
| Notes sync | When you turn it on | A folder you choose (for example OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive) | Your notes and flashcards, written to that folder. The cloud service you use has its own privacy policy. |
Librea AI can also work without going online from Librea:
- A model on this PC : Librea talks to it only at an address on this PC (such as
127.0.0.1) and never sends it a key. Your documents do not leave the PC. - Your AI app : when you turn it on, AI apps you have set up on this PC can search and read the books you choose to share, through a private connection on this PC; nothing listens on the network. Adding notes or flashcards asks you first. What the AI app then does with what it reads follows that app’s own privacy policy.
Conversions, OCR, search and everything else run on your PC. Nothing else is sent.
What Librea does not do
- No usage statistics, crash reports or analytics.
- No account and no online licence activation: keys are checked on your PC.
- No advertising, and no selling or sharing of data.
This website
This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics. The demo keeps what you change (notes, settings, the Pro switch) in this browser’s local storage only; Reset clears it. The download links go to GitHub, which has its own privacy statement. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts.
Your rights
Because your data stays on your PC, you can see, export, correct or delete it yourself. If you write to us, we use your message only to answer it. If Pro licences are sold through a payment service, that service handles the payment and its privacy policy applies; we keep the name and email needed to issue and recover your key.
Changes and contact
If what Librea sends changes, this page changes with it, before the version that changes it. Questions: Librea’s questions and bug reports page.
